Eagles Erase Five-Run Deficit in Win Over Talladega Wednesday
By Brandon Wright, RU Athletics
WALESKA, Ga. – No. 23 Reinhardt baseball used four runs in the seventh inning or later to overcome non-conference opponent Talladega (Ala.) at home Wednesday, 9-6.
The win gives the Eagles a 17-9 overall record and their sixth victory in their last seven games.
The Tornadoes got on the board in the opening half of the first inning with a 2-run home run and continued pouring it on in the top of the second frame with four more hits and three more runs.
This gave Talladega a five-run lead after just two innings.
The Eagles would respond in a big way in the bottom of the third inning after an error by the Tornadoes, a balk and an RBI-single by Xavier Arnette made way for three Reinhardt runs to score.
Reinhardt then tied the game back up in the bottom of the fifth inning when Gianmarco Marcelletti hit a 2-RBI single. Two innings later, Marcelletti came up big again when he blasted a 3-run homer, his third long ball of the year, to give his Eagles an 8-5 lead after seven stanzas.
Both teams would tack on one more tally apiece, which allowed the home squad to seal the comeback victory, 9-6.
Four different pitchers took the mound for Reinhardt, allowing a collective 11 hits, striking out six batters and walking none. Chandler Gant was credited with the win after allowing zero hits in two innings of work.
Marcelletti ended his monstrous day 2-of-3 with five RBIs, two runs scored and a home run.
Andres Ugarte was also 2-of-3 on the day with two walks.
Reinhardt will resume Appalachian Athletic Conference play on Friday on the road in Columbia, S.C., where it will face Columbia International in the opening game of a three-game series.
Games two and three will be held at Noon and 3 p.m. on Saturday, respectively.
