COLUMBIA, S.C. – In very unorthodox fashion, the Eagles completed a three-game sweep – on the road – all in the same day against Columbia International (S.C.) (8-4, 7-2 and 7-4) after Friday's opener was suspended due to darkness and completed Saturday morning before the original doubleheader.
The victories push the Reinhardt record to 20-9 and 9-6 inside the Appalachian Athletic Conference and includes a five-game winning streak.
"What a day for our team," head coach Jonathan Burton said. "This weekend was all about pulling together, being together and playing together. Nothing was ideal about this series, but these guys put together an outstanding day of baseball today. To win three games is tough, and to win three conference games in one day is tougher.
"I am excited about our growth as a team, as we have some kids really stepping up right now in big moments; it's not just the older players… It's the freshmen too."
Game 1, W (8-4)
- The No. 23 Eagles scored in three different innings, including five in the third frame, to take the opener – which was suspended heading to the eighth due to darkness on Friday evening.
- In the aforementioned third stanza, the visitors got on the board thanks to a Jarrett Burney sacrifice fly, and then the lead jumped to 3-0 after a 2-RBI double from Andres Ugarte. Gianmarco Marcelletti then put an exclamation point on the scoring with a 2-run blast to left.
- The Rams got a pair of tallies back in the bottom of the inning on a 2-run shot of their own, and two more runs in the sixth to get within 5-4. The deficit would grow in the next at-bat, however, as the Eagles got a pair on a single and an error.
- The suspension of play would come and go after Reinhardt led, 7-4. The road team would be the only one to score on Saturday morning with one in the ninth on a bases-loaded walk.
- Three guys earned a trio of hits in the victory, and Ethan Foley was victorious from the mound after 5.2 innings, five strikeouts and two earned runs.
Game 2, W (7-2)
- Daniel Dolensky – the school's all-time leader in strikeouts – was dealing in game two as he went seven strong frames and struck out seven more while allowing just one hit… A solo homer in the bottom of the sixth.
- Dalton Turnbow jolted the offense with a 2-run shot in the top of the first and that would seemingly be all the run support Dolensky would need in this game.
- Turnbow pulled in a third RBI on a single to shallow right-field in the fifth to make the score, 3-0, before Columbia International got on the board for the first time in the next inning on the previously mentioned solo shot.
- The two-run cushion would grow to four after a pair of tallies in the seventh – an RBI-double and a SAC fly – bringing the scoresheet to 5-1 moving to the eighth. Another single tally by the Rams would be responded to by another couple tallies, as Turnbow (3-for-3 and two walks) got into the action again along with Xavier Arnette.
- Reinhardt outhit Columbia International, 11-1, as three more Eagles registered multiple knocks.
Game 3, W (7-4)
- The visitors from Waleska completed the unimaginable three-game sweep in one day after holding to a 7-4 final in the finale. The victory started with three runs in the second on four hits, but the cushion was cut to one (3-2) in the bottom of the frame after the Rams got RBIs on a triple and single.
- A 2-run homer gave the hosts the advantage, 4-3, in the fifth, but they gave it right back in the top of the sixth thanks to three runs on five more hits.
- Just for good measure, Dalton Turnbow hit one over the fence once again for a 7-4 lead – the eventual final.
- The Eagles accumulated 13 more hits and four players racked up multiple knocks again.
- Parker Miller got the win on the mound after four innings of work, and Alex Watkins got a save after 1.1 innings to become the program's all-time leader in saves at nine.
Next up on the schedule is a visit from the Knights of Middle Georgia State – who is ranked No. 11 – on Monday afternoon for a single game beginning at 4 p.m.
