Bats Come to Life Against Martin Methodist (Tenn.)
By Mike DeVader, Reinhardt Director of Athletic Communications & Media
WALESKA, Ga. – Home runs from Gianmarco Marcelletti and Blake Rogers helped get No. 16 Reinhardt on track Wednesday in an 8-3 victory over Martin Methodist (Tenn.) in front of a lively crowd at Ken White Baseball Field.
Marcelletti's opposite-field blast in the third and Rogers' 3-run shot in the fifth helped the Eagles improve to 22-9 after the non-conference triumph.
"It was important for us to find a way to start fast today and put the pressure on them, and I thought we did that," head coach Jonathan Burton said. "We just have to do a better job of putting teams away. Today, we used the home run to separate ourselves, but the important thing is we are finding new ways to win each time we play.
"This weekend is very important for us, especially with the help that we got last weekend within the league. We need to make sure we use this momentum heading into Bluefield and have another great weekend."
Andres Ugarte earned another RBI and gave his club a 1-0 lead in the second before the aforementioned Marcelletti smash tripled the advantage. Ugarte then made it 4-0 on a sacrifice fly to wrap up the third frame.
The RedHawks got on the board in a big way in the top of the fifth with a 2-run moonshot to cut their deficit to 4-2. Rogers then took the momentum right back – and added a run – with his 3-run rip to left-center.
Albert Mora got into the action with an RBI in the sixth before Martin Methodist got a solo homer in the seventh to wrap up the scoring.
The Eagles totaled 12 hits and Marcelletti was 3-for-5 with three runs scored. Mora and Ugarte also had two hits.
Carson Bennink got the victory after five innings and a pair of stikeouts.
On the bases, the hometown squad stole three bases.
A three-game series with Bluefield (Va.) is up next on the road beginning Friday with a doubleheader at 1 p.m.
