Big Inning Pushes Eagles to Series Win at Rams
By Mike DeVader, Reinhardt Director of Athletic Communications & Media
BLUEFIELD, Va. – Reinhardt baseball was able to clinch an Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) series against Bluefield (Va.) on Saturday afternoon, and did so with six runs in the sixth inning en route to an 11-7 final.
The 16th-ranked Eagles (24-10, 11-7 AAC) pounded out 11 hits and were led offensively by Jacob Profit, who as the designated hitter, went 3-for-5 with a team-best four RBIs.
"That was a difficult weekend," lead Eagle Jonathan Burton said. "To miss an entire week of baseball, come back and practice one day then start playing again is not easy. Proud of how we fought today… That was refreshing.
"We found some things offensively after the fifth inning yesterday in game two and carried it into today. We still are doing some unnecessary things on the bases, but to win the series and keep us in the position we are nationally is important for us moving forward."
The Rams took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a sacrifice fly, but immediately gave up the lead in the second after the hometown team added two runs on a pair of RBI singles. Not long after, however, Bluefield regained the advantage at 3-2 in the bottom of the third following a 2-RBI single to right.
Profit doubled to left to tie the contest at 3-3 in the fifth frame, and then watched as his group exploded for a half-dozen in its next at-bat on four hits and two errors. Highlights in the scoring included an RBI-single from Keven Jimenez, a 2-RBI single from Profit, a steal of home and an RBI-knock from Xavier Arnette to make it 9-3.
The Rams got back within three at 9-6 on two RBI-singles and a run-scoring double, but the visitors pushed the cushion back to five tallies thanks to a pair of RBI-groundouts in the eighth and ninth innings.
Bluefield got one more run back in the bottom-half of the ninth, but couldn't get close enough to truly be a threat.
Jimenez, Arnette and Nick Sanders (two runs scored) all gathered a pair of hits in the triumph.
Five pitchers hit the mound to grab the victory on the road, but Parker Miller got the win after five innings, two walk and three strikeouts.
A make-up doubleheader against Kentucky Christian is up next at home on Monday at Ken White Baseball Field.
First pitch is set for Noon.
