WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. – Reinhardt will continue playing on the diamond at least one more day after going 2-0 Tuesday when it needed it the most against Mayville State (N.D.) (2-1) and host Cumberlands (Ky.) (5-1).
The Eagles (34-20) did a good job with their backs against the wall by putting together some quality at-bats and strong pitching performances to take care of business against the Comets and top-seeded Patriots, respectively.
Mayville State was able to score first in the opener on yet another home run early in the game with a solo shot in the second, but better late than never, the hometown team scratched across a pair of tallies in the bottom of the eighth on an RBI-bunt by Jackson Sisk and an RBI-double from Andres Ugarte to deep right field for the winning run.
Alex Watkins would then close the door in the ninth with a save – one that ended with a double play.
Doss Arnold got the start in game one, pitching well, but got a no-decision after seven innings of work and five strikeouts. Chandler Gant got the victory in relief.
Ugarte had two hits on offense, and on the bases, Reinhardt swiped a pair of bags in the positive outcome.
That victory helped the Eagles move on to take on Cumberlands in yet another win-or-go-home battle in Kentucky in primetime. The hometown group would put together its best performance so far in the postseason against the NAIA's No. 3-ranked team en route to the 5-1 win.
Reinhardt would get on the scoreboard in the second, third and fourth frames for a comfortable 4-0 lead, which was held onto by a dominant pitching performance from Daniel Dolensky – who went the entire way with 11 Ks.
The scoring got started with a sacrifice fly in the second from Xavier Arnette, and then the lead was doubled (2-0) in the third on a single up the middle from Albert Mora. The advantage jumped to 4-0 after four frames thanks to four more hits, including RBI-knocks from both Keven Jimenez and Gianmarco Marcelletti.
Dolensky continued to be a brick wall on the mound, not allowing anything to go the Patriots' way on this night. The offense got him another insurance tally in the bottom of the eighth thanks to a throwing error.
Cumberlands avoided the shutout with a two-out homer, but it was too little, too late.
The Eagles gathered nine hits in the win, and individually, seven players registered at least one knock.
Reinhardt also stole four more bases.
The team faces elimination again tomorrow at Noon, but will get a chance to avenge its loss against LSU-Shreveport (La.).
