Webber Overcomes Late Deficits to Take MSC Decision
By Brandon Wright, RU Athletics
BABSON PARK, Fla. – Men's volleyball could not hold on to late-game leads Saturday on the road as it came up just short in all three sets against Webber International (Fla.) – 21-25, 23-25, 22-25.
The loss puts the Eagles at 8-7 on the year with a 6-4 Mid-South Conference (MSC) record.
"Guys battled hard, but we just couldn't close sets," lead Eagle CJ Shearer said. "I need to do better this week helping them handle these moments, as well as continuing to get our minds right. We lost tight sets and it's my job as a coach to help these young men get over the hump.
"Everything goes to God, and we look forward to Life on Wednesday."
Set one was a back-and-forth affair for nearly the entire time until Reinhardt took a 21-16 lead. The Eagles then allowed the Warriors to go on a 9-0 run and take the first game by a score of 25-21.
The next set was also very close the entire time. Reinhardt forced a tie at 22-all but could only get one more point as they fell, 25-23.
Stanza three was very similar to the first set in which Reinhardt had a solid lead and then allowed Webber International to go on a run. This time, the Eagles led, 22-17, and then allowed the Warriors to score eight unanswered and steal the set and match.
Chase Cross led the way in kills for Reinhardt with 10 and points with 13. Three Eagles – Cross, Ricardo Mujica, and Nicolas Castro – had seven digs apiece.
Mujica also pitched in 19 assists and four points.
Matthew Corrales had a nice all-around day with 6 kills, 2 aces and 4 digs.
The Eagles will look to bounce back from their two-match skid against No. 14 Life (Ga.) on the road on Wednesday.
Reinhardt is 1-1 on the year against the in-state opponent.
First serve starts at 7 p.m.
