WALESKA, Ga. – Rio Grande (Ohio) took two games from the Eagles on the softball field Saturday after the RedStorm was able to find just enough offense to outlast Reinhardt in both contests at Ken White Softball Field, 3-2 and 5-3.
The 21st-ranked Eagles' six-game winning streak is now history as they move ahead in the schedule at 10-4.
"We did some things well, but in the end, Rio was the better team today," head coach Jade Geuther said. "Credit to them."
Game one saw a quiet game offensively that had a 1-1 score after the first frame on a homer and RBI-groundout. Rio Grande would regain the lead in the third inning on a sacrifice fly – and add another tally in the sixth on back-to-back doubles (3-1) – before trying to hold on.
Reinhardt, who collected 10 hits, had multiple chances to get back in the game. Perhaps the best opportunities came in the late innings, where the Eagles left two runners stranded in the sixth and scored one in the seventh before a 5-3 putout ended the threat.
Three hometown players collected two hits each in defeat, while Reagen Radke gave up three runs and struck out three as well.
The hosts were able to take the lead in game two on an error and added a couple more runs – following the RedStorm tying the outing in the third – in the bottom of the third stanza on a 2-run blast deep to left by Emma Adams for a 3-1 lead.
Rio Grande would immediately respond in the top of the fourth with four runs on five hits and never looked back.
Adams and Kyrstyn Fisher both gathered a pair of knocks in the nightcap.
The two schools complete the four-game series with a doubleheader tomorrow at Noon.
