WALESKA, Ga. – The Bulldogs of Union (Ky.) came into Ken White Softball Field on Friday evening and shook up the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) standings in a big way after upsetting No. 8 Reinhardt in a doubleheader sweep, 3-0 and 7-5 (9 innings).
The Eagles (27-7, 11-3 AAC) managed just six hits in the opener and couldn't take advantage of scoring opportunities after leaving numerous runners on base all night. The Bulldogs scored single tallies in the three separate frames (including the first) to take a 1-0 lead on the day.
Jill Martinet was 2-for-4 as the only player with multiple hits for Reinhardt.
Game two, however, had a different feel to it for the Eagles as they started quickly with two runs in the bottom of the first on a sacrifice fly and a single.
Union would get another homer in the top of the second for a 2-1 deficit, but the hole would be right back to 3-1 after another SAC fly in the second – this one from Reagen Radke. Reinhardt would get single runs in the fourth and fifth to move ahead by four, 5-1, but the party was about to get crashed by the Bulldogs.
In the top of the seventh, the visitors got an RBI-double, RBI-single, a SAC fly and benefited from an Eagle miscue to tie the scoreboard at 5-5 with two outs. Reinhardt would fail to bring home a runner from second in the bottom-half of the seventh – and couldn't score in the eighth – before a double and single both brought in runs for Union in the top of the ninth.
Ashlyn Wilkes walked to open the frame in the bottom portion, but wouldn't move to another base after the Reinhardt bats were silenced.
Megan Huss was 3-for-4 to lead the way offensively in game two. Four additional teammates collected two hits each also.
The team has to come together and try to rebound quickly as No. 20 Truett McConnell (Ga.) – who leads in the AAC standings – is up next in a road doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m. on March 30.
