The Bats Opened Up for the Eagles at Montreat
David Finney
Laurinburg, NC - After having a tough day getting runners on base and across the plate on Saturday's doubleheader at Milligan, the Eagles responded with an explosion of runs at Montreat. In the doubleheader, Reinhardt put up huge numbers in both games winning game one, 12-1, and game two, 15-4. Both games would be called in the 5th innings because of the run rule in softball.
Game One
Ally Andriano was the starting pitcher for game one and she got in two innings before being relieved by Kyra Lightner. Lightner pitched the final three innings of the game. Andriano struck out 4 batters and only allowed 2 hits and zero runs. Lightner would get one strikeout and allow two hits and one run.
The offense came mainly from the second and third innings where the Eagles would pick up ten runs. In the second, Kalyn Jinks doubled to score JJ Trowell. Jinks eventually scored when Alexis Griffith singled to short. With Griffith and Alexis Teems on base, Emily Loveless would single to bring in Teems. Griffith would finally score when Alanna Dunson got on base from being hit by pitch. Next, Hannah Kate Singleton singled to left field line to score Dunson and Jill Martinet. After the second inning, the score was 6-0.
In the third inning, Emily Loveless singled again which scored Alexis Teems. With Loveless and Alexis Griffith on base, Alanna Dunson would get a home run to bring in 3 runs for the Eagles. The score was 10-0 after the third inning and at this point, the ballgame was basically over. The Eagles were able to add two more runs in the top of the fifth. Hannah Kate Singleton singled to score Loveless and JJ Trowell doubled to center to bring in Jill Martinet. The score was 12 to 1 going into the bottom of the fifth where the Cavaliers would be held scoreless to end the game. Ally Andriano got the win in game one for the Eagles.
Game Two
Bella Krauth pitched the second game of the series with Montreat and was able to get in two of the total five innings. She would record 2 strikeouts on 5 hits and have one earned run against her. Whitney Shepherd would relieve Krauth in the third inning and she would finish out the game for the Eagles. Shepherd would record 2 strikeouts and only allow 4 total hits. She had two runs scored against her, but only one was earned.
The Eagles would score a lot of runs in this game with the most coming in the second inning. They were able to bring 12 across the plate in the second inning and a devastating blow like this crushes a team fast. It was fourteen total runs after the second inning and again, the game was over at this point of the game. The Eagles finished out by adding one more run to the score in the top of the fifth.
Emily Loveless, Jill Martinet, Alanna Dunson, Lauren Parker, and Kalyn Jinks all doubled in the game. Lauren Parker also hit a triple to add to her total. Emily Loveless would homer in the second inning which brought home Alexis Teems. Lauren Woods would also homer in the fifth inning which was a solo shot. A lot of backup players got to see some quality time in this game as the score got really high quickly. Alexis Teems, Alexis Griffith, and Lauren Parker would all go 2 for 3 in the game. Emily Loveless would go 2 for 2 and Isabella Adams would go 2 for 4 in the game. Bella Krauth would get the win for the Eagles. It was an outstanding job by the batters to bring in the much-needed runs for the Eagles after not doing as well on Saturday.
Look for the Eagles to continue their run this week as they have a busy conference schedule coming up. Reinhardt will be traveling to Bryan College on Tuesday and then they will head to Kentucky Christian on Thursday. The Eagles will return home for a series with Truett McConnel on Monday, April 4th, and Brenau on Tuesday, April 5th.
