BARBOURVILLE, Ky. – Four second-half goals by the Eagles, including a pair from Adrien Merrilles, thrust Reinhardt women's soccer into the winner's column in its first Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) matchup of the season with a 4-0 blanking of Union (Ky.).
The hometown team is back to .500 on the year with a 3-3 mark after the league triumph on the road.
"Road conference games are always a challenge," head coach Andy Kaplan said. "Union worked very hard in the first half and it took us a while to settle down and play our game. We did really well playing our possession-style attack in the second half. All four goals came from great team play and I was very pleased that our team defending held Union without a shot in the second half."
The first half was a battle of the defenses as neither team allowed a goal and both clubs combined for nine shots in the period. The second 45 minutes, however, was a different story – particularly for the Reinhardt offensive attack – as it tallied 13 total shots and four scores.
Merrilles made the game 1-0 at 56:42, and then Adriana Garcia found the back of the net a little more than a minute later for a 2-0 advantage after beating the last line of defense. The scoring pendulum swung back to Merrilles a few possessions later as the match got out of reach with her second goal on the night.
Brianna Smotherman would then join the scoring action at 85:35 for the fourth-and-final goal of the night.
The Eagles dominated the Bulldogs in all facets, collecting an 18-4 shot advantage (12-1 on shots on-goal).
Four players had multiple scoring attempts in the game.
The squad now comes back to Ken White Field at University Stadium for a trio of games – beginning on Sept. 18 – against Point (Ga.) at 5 p.m.
